Reaction Essay

At the first point of “ The Tipping Point”, Malcolm Gladwell, the author of this book, mentioned why some concepts, behaviors, and products can spread very fast. The most important part is that information can spread very fast by word of mouth. The author thinks that people who create new trends in thought are dreamers. The way which dreamers spread their mind is advertisement. The author called them connectors. The kind of people who start new ideas are called “The law of the Few”. This law mentions three types of people: connectors, mavens, and salesmen. 

Furthermore, he talks about other rules of epidemics called “The stickiness Factor” and “The power of context”. Another interesting chapter is “The Magic Number”. We are easily influenced by people around us so we make lots of small communities. But what is the best number for community? 150! This number is easy to connect. The most important thing is that in a small community everyone knows each other. In a small community, the pressure from friends is greater than from a boss. 

People do not want to disappoint their friends. People who know each other well will create a interactive memory system, where different people each do the specific things they are good at. The interactive memory constitutes parts of intimate relationship. This is called tacit understanding.

I think The Tipping point is one of the best non-fiction books. I think everyone should read it. This is because we can learn a lot from it. If you want to be a businessman, I strongly recommend you to read it. 

After read it, I was thinking why some products can be very popular. For example, iPhone is very popular. I think that is because iPhone has a lot of special thing. The appearance of iPhone is very concise. I do not find any other phones as beautiful as the iPhone. The software of the iPhone is very useful. Apple uses cutting edge technology to design iPhone. Because it has so many advantages that make it awesome. 

If people want to create a fashion trend, they should specialize on one specific part of fashion. I think connectors, mavens, and salesman are the perfect people to spread information. For example, Steven Jobs could sale iPhone very well. I think he was all three of these people. Because of that, I highly recommend this book.

How to handle the poverty problem?

For this project, I studied the benefits of that government helps handle the poverty problem.

     This is an important issue because the poverty problem is happened in a lot of places. A lot of people cannot feed their family members. A lot of children cannot go to school. Poverty is a hard problem, but it is the most serious problem to handle.

     This project presents my findings and hopefully as a guide for you to learn more about this topic. First, here is a video I made that briefly summarizes the issue and my thoughts on the topic. I have also found some vocabulary words that can help you understand this topic. Moreover, I posted summaries on two readings that relate to my topic with their links. Finally, this is my argument essay where I detailed my opinion on the issues.

Argument Essay: How to handle the poverty problem

Do you know which countries have a problem with poverty? With the rapid development of society, a lot of people think that poverty is not a serious problem, but the truth is that poverty is still very common in a lot of places. A lot of people cannot eat enough or get education, because the economy is keeping them down. If governments help poor people by assisting them to feed their families and educate their children, the problem of poverty will be solved, and the economy would ultimately improve.

Government can help people feed their families. They cannot solve the problem by themselves, so the government should help them. I saw some data form the discovery channel. Every year almost 4 million people die because of hunger, and over two billion people do not have enough to eat. Poverty is a large problem that will not be easy to solve, but governments must help their people. The whole country will not be stable. Survival is the most important problem to people. If people cannot eat, they will not focus on friendship, love, or even family bonds. I think there are a few ways to solve the world’s hunger problems. For example, government can organize people to grow food. If the land is not good for farming, people can make their own unique local products to trade for food. We can plan a lot of things, but we can do nothing without food. It is the first step.

Second, the government can help people get an education. If people can learn enough, they will change their life. The more knowledge they have, the more opportunity to earn; the more possibility they have to succeed, the better their chances at changing their life. For example, Abraham Lincoln was very poor when he was a child, but his stepmother took care of him very well. He got enough education to become a lawyer. Finally, he became the president of the United States. If everyone learns enough, they will change their life and earn more money.

Last but not least, the country’s economy will develop. Like I just mentioned, government can help people get enough food and get educated. Ultimately, people can change the economy. If the country is rich, the government can solve problems more easily. For example, Saudi Arabia’s government is very rich, so they can send a lot of people to study abroad. If the government handles the poverty problem well, the country will be getting strong. For example, China was very poor in the past. In last thirty years, the government was very successful to handle the poverty problem. Now China is becoming rich. However, many say that the government does not have enough money to solve the poverty problem. I think this is a very important question. If a country has a lot of poor people, I do not think the government will be very rich. It is hard to let the government help poor people. Fifty years ago, China was very poor, and Chinese people were even poorer. Although the Chinese government really wanted to help the Chinese people, the government did not have the ability to help. I think different cases of poverty require different solutions.

If the government solves the poverty problem well, the country would not have starving people. Their people could get education, and the economy would improve. To sum up, poverty is a hard problem, but it is the most serious problem to handle.

In “Poverty reduction” of “Poverty in the People's Republic of China,” the authors for wikipedia write about that Chinese economic grows faster after economic reform in 1978 by using statistics. He claims that China increased its human capital by open door policy and drop tariffs below 100% after joining WTO that will attract foreign investment to “special economic zones”. He also says the coming of foreign investment will lead to an improvement in investment environment by using “Local governments in coastal cities have lowered loss of output”. He also support that these improvements drive down the poverty rate of China from 63% in 1981 to 10% in 2004. Two main reason of this decline are increased in agricultural output and impact of joining WTO. Increasing in agriculture output cut half of poverty rate and joining WTO cut a third of poverty rate. This article claims that there is a poverty reduction in China due to rapid economic growth.



“Poverty Line in China May Be Raised” from “tvsou.com”, the author talked about the Chinese government may raise the poverty line to enable more people to get State benefits to meet their needs. It mentions that the cost of living in China is lower that in many other countries. About 43 million people were living below the poverty line in the country’s rural areas in 2007. Their number in urban areas was more than 22 million. The World Bank change the poverty line form $1 to $1.25 per day, so there are 207 million people were live in poverty in 2005 in China on the basis of the new standard. Due to China is moving from low-income per capita country to mid-income per capita country, increase in poverty line can serve as a call for China to carry out more effective policies to help the poor. As time changes, expense on everything is in an increasing trend as well as higher living standard. Therefore, the Chinese government decide improve the poverty line from 1067 Yuan to 1300 Yuan in order to accompany with the rapid growth economy.

I want to talk about the river pollution. With the development of society, the river pollution is becoming important.
